Sigean

South of Narbonne is Sigean separated from the coast by a series of salty etangs. Sigeans' main attraction is the large drive through African Nature Reserve (open daily 9am-9pm 04 68 48 20 20). Supposedly home to over 3,000 different animals the reserve has recreated several equatorial habitats where you will see hippopotamus, rhinoceros, giraffe, lions and springboks. There is also a bird reserve, a bear area and a separate island for the chimpanzees at the south end of the park. There is not much else in Sigean itself although there is a small archeological museum near the tourist office where you can see artefacts which were recovered from the nearby oppidum; the remains of this sixth century BC hill top settlement can also be visited.

There are the usual cafes for a coffee like the wonderful old glassed-in Cafe La Rotunda right in the centre of town complete with African Grey parrot who sits quite happily chatting away on his perch. There are a couple of nice restaurants who serve the usual food, the one that is directly opposite the Rotunda serves particularly nice pizza, along side the usual menu and they are all reasonably priced. There is a reasonably new Asian restaurant along the road, along with a couple of others that serve plain meals with mussels being a favourite in the area.

There is also a small internet cafe here but it has never been open whilst we have been in the area? There are a couple of supermarkets on the edges of town and also a swimming pool.
