Mirepoix
Medieval Mirepoix used to stand on the right bank of the river Hers, at the foot of the castle of Terride. In 1289, the town was flooded, only the castle was spared. The survivors and Gui de L»vis had the town rebuilt ten years later ont the left bank, after a perpendicular plan, with a central square..The square and the covered galleries.
The central square with the covered galleries. The half-timbered houses over wooden pillars make up covered galleries adorned with sculptures. The House of Consuls is the most beautiful in the square. Above the main beam, lie smaller pieces of wood the end of which are carved in the shapes of animals, crowned men and women weaving hats, and even grotesques.
This old town gate (14 th century) is the only remaining gate of the ancient town walls. St Maurice's cathedral A meridional gothic stlyle cathedral (12th and 16th century).
It was enlarged by stages from 1327 to the 16th century. Its one-span nave (22 m) ranks as the largest in France, second largest in Europe. Not to be missed : the 60 metre-high steeple, the gothic porch, a 14th century christ, keystones two of which are remarkable, the German crafted great organ and the richly carved 16th century pulpit.
