Gruissan

Gruissan and Gruissan-Plage are very nice quiet fishing towns about 20km southeast of Narbonne. The circular streets huddle around an ancient tower. Gruissan has not been affected by over development but is still popular with walking and cycling fans. There are the ruins of the Watchtower to explore (free entry) and not much else. You will see the fisherman going about their business bringing in their catch and selling it in the market. There are a few bars and restaurants along the shore, Cafe De La Paix 04 68 49 53 83 where you can have a flutter on the horses too with PMU rapido. For a well priced seafood meal you could try L'Estangol on avenue de Narbonne 04 68 49 01 27 the patio area has good views, or Le Lamparo at 4 rue Amiral-Courbet in old Gruissan. There are some modern two and three star hotels if you do wish to stay the night, Le Tahiti 04 68 49 22 28 is reasonably priced and right on the beachfront, or the Port 04 68 49 07 33 which is closer to the old town and slightly more expensive. If you want to aid your digestion you could pick up a walking itinerary from the tourist office, a popular one takes you to the local sailor's graveyard, and hill top chapel, Notre-Dame-des-Auzils, this walk can take between 1-3 hours depending on your start point, (town or car park up the hill). The landscape along the walk is typically Mediterranean, cypress trees etc and from the top you can enjoy a lovely panoramic view of the yellow sands and turquoise sea.
