Fort de Salses ~ Salses le Ch’teau
Fort de Salses is an enormous stronghold built to dominate the strip of land between the Etang de Leucate and the uplands of the Corbieres. The fortress (Open Daily: July & August 9:30am-7pm, June & September 9:30am-6:30pm, April, May & October 9:30am-12:30pm & 2pm-6pm, November-March 10am-noon & 2pm-5pm, € 4.88), it was constructed by the Spanish in the fifteenth-century to guard the northern border of Roussillon from French attack. The fortress sits low inside a deep moat, it's red stone contrasting with the green of the surrounding grass. It withstood four sieges before it was taken by the French in 1642; with the shift of the frontier south to the mountains the fortress was initially abandoned then later used as a prison until 1886 when it was declared a monument. In the village to the east of the fort there is a museum, Musee Catalan d'Histoire (Open: Tuesday-Saturday 9:30am-12:30pm & 2:30pm-7:30pm; free admission), where you can view the small collection of arms along with archeological relics going back to the Roman period.
